Portrait of a different kind

A Portrait of a Different Kind (Joan & David)
"A Portrait of a Different Kind" is a mixed-media painting created under my contemporary art brand, Fozart. This piece is a definitive example of my Spiritual Snapshots framework—rejecting traditional figurative representation to capture the enduring soul, faith, and legacy of a deeply loved matriarch.
Rather than a standard portrait, the artwork translates the essence of my late mother-in-law, Joan, through the form of a cherry blossom tree—a direct mirror of one she tenderly cultivated in her own garden. Joan was a dedicated nurse to the terminally ill, a woman of profound faith, and an absolute tower of strength for her family.
The Narrative Within the Texture
• The Inscription: Carved deeply into the heavily weathered, sculpted trunk is the inscription 'J 4 D' (Joan for David), a monument to her husband who passed away suddenly from cancer at age 69.
• The Trunk: The rugged, unyielding texture of the trunk reflects the immense resilience Joan maintained for her four children, anchored by her deep born-again Christian faith. Her heart was broken by David's loss, leading to the return of the breast cancer that eventually claimed her life at 66.
• The Canopy: In stark contrast to the heavy trunk, the vibrant, cascading canopy of pink blossoms represents her nurturing grace as a nurse and mother, alongside the beautiful, fleeting nature of life itself.
This piece stands as a visual testament to the idea that a great love is never truly lost; its roots remain permanently bound to ours, and its memory continues to bloom
